CHAPTER 6

The Guns Must Be Taken!

Previously, back at Chippawa, and as the shadows of the day had lengthened, General Brown had heard the sounds of heavy gunfire coming from the north. Upon receiving Scott’s initial report, he ordered General Ripley to advance his Second Brigade. At the same time, General Porter was directed to assemble his depleted militia force (detachments having previously been sent to Fort Erie, Lewiston, Buffalo, and Fort Schlosser) on the north bank of the Chippawa and await further orders.

Collecting the Twenty-First Regiment (Colonel Miller), the Twenty-Third Regiment (Major McFarland), as well as two artillery batteries (Captain Biddle’s and Captain Richie’s), which were already in the process of assembling for their evening parade, Brigadier General Ripley began an immediate and rapid advance toward Lundy’s Lane. This force was then joined by Lieutenant Riddle’s detachment of the Nineteenth Regiment, which arrived back from its reconnaissance and, without making any report, simply joined the column and marched back to the battlefield. Shortly after, the Second Brigade was followed by three companies of the First Regiment (Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas). This unit had just arrived on the Niagara frontier that morning, was still in the process of rowing over troops from the American side of the river, and without orders had followed the old military maxim of marching to the sound of the guns. While marching toward Lundy’s Lane, Brown received a further report from Scott through Major Wood (Corps of Engineers), calling for reinforcements. In response, Brown sent back orders to General Porter to bring forward his Third Brigade, as well as any other units that could be formed from those troops still in camp.
